Weekend Wrap Up

This weekend was a blur! I was beyond busy with blogging and things around the house but all-in-all in was GREAT!! I met so many new people, had tons of fun, worked with amazing designers and photographers on photo shoots and even finished OITNB (Orange Is The New Black). Side Note: I can’t believe I have to wait another year for a new season. I’m more than sad about that!

All of my activities started Wednesday with hosting a private preview party at Mod Chic Boutique in Rice Village. I also hosted the Summer Garden Tea Party event at Mod Chic Boutique on Saturday. There is nothing like seeing peoples eyes light up when they lay their eyes on a garment that they know is perfect for them.

Sunday was soooo eventful! I started by attending the Brown Bloggers Brunch at Sweet Paris in City Center. The food was yummy and the company was amazing. Right after that, I traveled a few minutes away to the monthly Houston Bloggers Union meeting. There Elly, Jillian, and Jaclyn discussed ways to discover your value and monetize your blog. They were hilarious to listen to but more than that, they were honest in lending a hand to up and coming bloggers.

Lastly I was able to be a part of Designer Natalie Harris’s Damsel White Label Renegade Shoot Out. Natalie provided her out-of-the-box wedding gowns and models, while vendors brought in bouquets, flower crowns, and almost any prop you could imagine. Photographers were free to style their own shoots by selecting the gowns, models, etc.

When I finally got home I was truly exhausted but I honestly don’t regret one minute of it! Cheers to busy weekends, Enjoy the recap!

My Hair History 2010-2016

It has been a while since I’ve done a hair update, yet I answer¬†several questions about natural hair from my followers almost every day . I’ve put together a collage to show how my natural hair journey has progressed over the last 6 years. I will also give you a play by play of some of my most memorable hair moments that some of my new followers and subscribers may have missed.

First up is my big chop! August 2010 I was so inspired by my sister going natural that I decided to big chop as soon as my then boyfriend got back in town. I have an article on CurlsUnderstood.com detailing how it affected my relationship. It was fun to have my sister be able to join me for such a fun adventure.

Up next is my hair at its longest after being natural for about 3 years. At this point my son was already born and I was short on time and getting bored with my hair. The cure for boredom is change so I went for something fun. I shaved both sides of my hair in a mohawk style. I tried every style possible with this cut before I was ready for change again.

To cure my new found boredom I just shaved my entire head and it felt even better than cutting my hair the first time. Naturally there was no fear of the unknown. This time I even used my husband’s clippers to shave it myself. (You have not lived until you have shaved your own head bald. Love you Brittney Spears! )

After my hair started to grow back I was all about experimenting with color because I had never done it before. First I let my hair grow a tiny bit then I went right for purple. To get the hue I wanted I bleached my hair first, then I dyed it purple. Honestly I did not love that as much as I though I would.

From the purple, I cut most of it off and went darker with a deep burgundy but that didn’t last long. I eventually went platinum blonde for a month or so. Having my hair that light was an incredible amount of maintenance. My roots seemed to grow within two days of a retouch. My hair that was all ready light just got lighter and borderline white with each retouch.

That brings you up to the present. After a few weeks of growing, my natural hair color returned and I got my hair cut several times before deciding to grow my hair out into a tapered afro. You know I couldn’t stay away from the color so I went for a more natural light auburn which I loved even as it grew out as it is today.

So now that I have given you my entire ¬†hair history I must admit that I’M BORED AGAIN! I need a change so stay tuned to see what I’ll do next. Enjoy!

Mel’s Modern Caillgraphy

I first met Mel when she came aboard at our school as a second grade teacher. Like many teachers she is multifaceted and crazy talented. It only took knowing her for a short while to realize this. As the school year started I saw her classroom come together beautifully. I could not help but notice all the unique hand lettering  and calligraphy. Of course I went to ask where she had found such cool things for her room and her response was, “I made them”. My mind was pretty blown at that point. I later found out that she held a job while she attended college that allowed her to create cool custom stationary that helped her to nourish her creativity.

Not long ago Mel decided it was time for her to start her own business and named it “Three M Designs” (Melodie Marie Musgrove). She later changed the name to a much sweeter one to avoid any confusion with other companies with similar names. Her design company is now called “Maggie Elaine Designs” after her beloved weimaraner Maggie and her favorite character from the tv show Seinfield.

When Mel invited me to her home to take these photos I was even smitten with her living and work space. It is so vibrant and indicative of her talent as well as her artistic abilities. Every element and piece is carefully selected and in its right place. Her dining/work table is covered in butcher paper to protect it from craft materials and one small chalk board at the entry way allowed me to feel welcome and ready to create as soon as I walked in. The two stars of Mel’s home include a custom 5’by 6′ canvas piece hung carefully on the wall that says ” If you love what you have, you have everything you need ” and an original 1970’s sofa gifted to her by her grand parents. The sofa is adorned with bright floral prints and is built to last just like the special bond she shares with her family.

When I asked Mel what the future holds for Maggie Elaine Designs she said, “To continue to give her customers special stationary made from the heart”. As she continues on her path as an educator and future principal she will continue to design one of a kind creations. Check out Maggie Elaine Designs on Etsy for custom graphic lettering and stationary. Nourish your creativity. Enjoy!

Saks Grand Reopening

The new Saks Fifth Avenue in Houston is designed to be an experience. It has a new open layout¬†that is two levels which¬†allows everything to be spacious and grand. If you are wondering what’s different about the new location, I’m here to hook you up!

The new Saks is an additional 20,000 square feet, has 22 in store designer boutiques, 15 exclusive brands and an expanded restaurant. The Houston Saks is now the third largest in the country and is home to the second largest beauty and fragrance department in the nation outside of the New York Saks. There are now eight private shopping suites, the 10022 SHOE department, the Fifth Avenue Club, and a brand new amenity called the Saks At Your Service program. This personal shopping service has  dedicated staff that will deliver Saks products in a custom Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to your office, home or hotel.

When I vacationed in New York a few years ago, I¬†was pulled into the Saks to check out the Bond cologne counter at my husbands request.¬†Being in the new Houston Saks definitely gave a ¬†luxurious New York feel. The art installations make you feel like you’re in a museum and add a new element to the shopping experience. Go check it out when you have a free moment. Until then please¬†partake in¬†the photos I snapped for you. ¬†Enjoy!

Four Seasons Reno Reveal

Hey peeps!!! I got a chance to check out all the new renovations and changes to the spa at the Four Seasons Hotel downtown. As a DIYer I was excited to see such drastic changes. They have completely upgraded all the massage rooms, couples massage rooms, nail bar, check in area, and locker rooms. Mrs. Rosie even hooked all us girls up with a fresh coat of polish as a special treat! Of course I took delicious photos to share with all of you, enjoy!!

The Shelby Rose Collection

The Shelby Rose Collection began with a mom of two looking at her makeup pouch and wishing it was something that she loved. Shelby loves dance and over 26 years she has led, choreographed and performed countless times with the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets dance team. Even today as an elementary school teacher in Houston, Texas Shelby hosts a dance club for the students that she teaches physical education to.

Only close friends and family knew of another talent that Shelby would soon explore again. Shelby’s grandmother, Rose Marion Pullum was born in 1905 and gave Shelby the first sewing machine she ever owned. Rose taught her how to sew and creating and crafting has been apart of Shelby’s life ever since. At a friends request, Shelby sewed a few throw pillows and it was then that she realized that if she made her own makeup pouch, should would love it much more the the ones she currently owned. Shelby dusted off her sewing machine and explored her creativity in new ways.

Shelby went out and got fabrics that she loved for the pouches that she planned to make. While shopping for fabric she realized that she didn’t love her pouches because the INSIDE was boring! She resolved to fix that problem by using playful sophisticated prints on the outside and eclectic linings on the inside. It was then, that The Shelby Rose Collection was born.

Her handmade pouches come in 3 different sizes and are customizable. They can be used as a pouch as well as a clutch when you’re going out. You can check out The Shelby Rose Collection on:

February’s Kaleidoscope Mixer

Kaleidoscope Houston hosted its first creatives mixer at The Flat¬†this past Thurdsday. I hadn’t been around so many creatives since the Kaleidoscope Houston 3-day extravaganza in January! I can’t lie, it felt like going home to be in the midst of some many positive vibes and cool people.

DJ FXBOX kept the jams coming back to back while host Chris Thomas kept the laughs coming. We even got to see a bilingual spoken word performance by Kaleidoscope Houston performer Christopher Polanco. If you missed out this time be sure to make it out in March. Creatives will meet at The Flat on the last Thursday of every month. Put it your calendar for March and come connect with other creatives. Enjoy!

Advice From An Artist‚ÄĘ Joonbug!

Lenworth McIntosh. His mom calls him Junior, his friends call him Joonbug, his fans call him anything from Mr. McIntosh to Mr.Kaufee. He is the CEO and founder of a unique clothing company called Fresh Kaufee and is the head graphic designer at Bugs87 Art and Design.  When you order a Fresh Kaufee shirt you get a complete experience. It comes fashioned in a coffee bag with the robust aroma of freshly ground coffee. His unique packing and style completely sets him apart from other brands. I would describe his style as perfected imperfection. An obvious appreciation for culture, history, and old world quality is written all over the Fresh Kaufee brand.

Joonbug’s Jamaican roots tie together his top 5 sources of inspiration seamlessly. Generations of artists in his family, music, nature, books, and social media feeds his artistic spirit.

Joonbug and I first met in college at McMurry University in Abilene, Tx.¬†From the moment I met him, his passion for art was very¬†apparent. Towards the end of his undergrad career, he nearly fell into “cubicle life” as a graphic designer for a larger firm. Life’s pressures have a way of making you feel like you have to follow a certain path because we naturally fear the unknown. Joonbug didn’t like the idea of eventually being burned and at the same time, uncertainty didn’t sound so bad if it meant being his own boss and always having creative freedom.

Joonbug still frequents Dallas, Texas for family, friends and business but has moved to Oakland, California to be among other artists and avoid being boxed in artistically. Junior’s feelings are that “When it comes to careers, most people aren’t doing what comes naturally to them. We are all born with gifts and and we often ignore them and pay more attention to the rules society has set for us.” Joonbug being a full time artist was much ¬†more than a career choice. It is a life choice! He chose his continued happiness and daily satisfaction over everything.

What used to be most difficult for this artist was time management. When you’re your own boss you work when you want to. Joonbug took what used to be procrastination and turned it into time to truly conceptualize his plans, then he takes the pressure and produces amazing ¬†results.

I asked Joonbug what advice he would give to new and emerging artist and he said, “Respect yourself and your art. You can’t look to the outside world for confidence in what you do. Prove all you need to prove to yourself, validate yourself, then share things with the world that you are already confident in. Meditate, organize your thoughts, and keep your goals in front of you.”

See more of Joonbug on social media @thebugs87 and @freshkaufee

Check back in March for a new creative mind, Enjoy!

Kaleidoscope Houston 2016 | Jet Set

The phrase Jet Set can be described as an international social group of affluent people who travel the world to participate in social activities sometimes unavailable to ordinary people. Pamela Andino of Ubertina Productions pulled this theme off without a hitch.

Jet Set was the theme for Night 2 of Kaleidoscope Houston 2016. Guests arrived at La Mansion to the tunes of GenerAsian Radio. Hosts for the evening Chyna Wheatly and John Newinn only added to the international vibes. The eclectic attire worn by guests was pleasing to the eye and helped bring the Jet Set feel to life.

The nontraditional runway definitely peaked everyone’s attention and made us all feel like we were going on a adventure and having a unique experience. The runway was blazed by the classic designs of Steven Guthrie , the very sexy swim wear designed by Jessica Lombana, and the couture Meru Merus collection by Umair Khan.

The bilingual spoken word poetry by Christopher Polanco, dance performances by Culturally Yours & Son Kiss’d Dance company, as well as the flaming special performance by Saturn Hoops gave us all an authentic jet set experience. The opportunity to see such extraordinary culturally diverse performances and designs left me feeling so appreciative that I live in such a big melting pot. Take the journey with us through the photos and feel free to leave a comment ūüôā Enjoy!

Kaleidoscope¬†Houston 2016 | Urbanity

Kaleidoscope Houston 2016 kicked of its first night with Urbanity. I know there were things slated to happen but what actually happen was so much more than I could have imagined. I will start by saying that the energy in the mansion was one you had to experience. DJ Nando kept our bodies moving with the best hip hop tunes. So many creatives in one space supporting one another was just the tip of the iceberg. Every time I turned my head there was something amazing happening.

Host of the evening Omar Castillo was comedic and kept the evening flowing. For starters The Traveling Live Art Canvas was a real treat. I watched it change constantly through out the evening as many of the event guests put their stamp on it. Jammie of Jammie’ Art also live etched Houston’s own Bun B through out the evening. The Urban Movement team looked like super heroes as they performed parkour.

Each of the performing artists were so full of energy. The MadMen Crew took the floor to perform a few songs including a new Houston anthem. Raj the Rapper, who is also the founder of Houston Diaper Bank, performed a mix of inspirational and feel good songs. Tobe Nwigwe of Team GINI performed both spoken word as well as inspiring rap songs that are meant to keep us conscience.

Everyone was astounded with the dance performances of the evening.¬†Brenden Winkfield¬†tap danced with a live drummer for an impromptu jam session.¬†Bgirls Femme Fatale Cru¬†showed off their Bgirl skills as they stormed the runway for Swinn.¬†As the runway show continued, beautifully designed pieces created by Art Institute of Houston¬†emerging artists Wilbert, Keosha, and Kim stunned onlookers. The consensus in the room was “there’s no way these are student designs! They are so amazing!”¬†Shayne Salinas of Kooth Brand made us all remember that you can and should look good while your working hard. If you missed Kaleidoscope Houston 2016, make sure you’re in the house next year!

Urbanity was the best way to start Kaleidoscope Houston 2016! Check back soon for Jet Set and Imaginarium! Enjoy!

ArtOnIt Makeup By Sergio Escalona

The man behind the make up, Sergio Escalona, a brilliant free spirit with a plethora of ideas. The first time I visited L’atelier De ArtOnIt is was full of supporters as Sergio and artist Elizabeth Hinson Wolever launched the Winter 2015|Spring 2016 collection. This time around I was able to get them all to myself for great conversation and an “outside of the box” personalized makeup session with Sergio. I adore how Elizabeth got her inspiration to design the Les Chats de Ballet Noel compact. Check it out‚̧ԳŹ

The Story: Most of my inspiration for “Les Chats de Ballet Noel” comes from memories of my childhood. Ever since the first time I watched professional ballerinas dance in The Nutcracker, I wanted to do the same. I fell in love with the music, magical scenery, and costumes. My best friend and I auditioned with the Houston Ballet Academy as young children, and were both accepted. After auditioning for The Nutcracker and not making it, I was disappointed, but quickly got over it and turned my energy toward art and music. I still love ballet, and have a huge nutcracker collection, but art is now my true passion! The holidays always remind me of wanting to be in the Nutcracker as a child, and the music reminds me of practicing in the ballet studio with my dear best friend. Last holiday season I created “Les Chats de Ballet Noel” as I was listening to music from The Nutcracker. Of course I had to make the main subject my cat character, inspired by my cat Einstein, and I’m supposed to be the cat in the middle that is turning the wrong direction! Meow! ~EHW

Located at 3000 Sage near the Galleria, L’atelier De ArtOnIt is a beautiful, bright, clean, inviting space. Quite frankly it was hard to leave. It would have been so easy to hang around there all day. Sergio even showed us an awesome painting that he has been working on. If I’m working creatively on something, having the right space, light, and energy makes or breaks my level of productivity. It’s no wonder that Sergio can create amazing makeup looks and paintings there.

We decided on doing a dual look to play around with both palettes that Elizabeth selected and designed. It was a fun idea that enabled us to see the color combinations and possibilities of both palettes. Plus, how often do you get to have two different looks on your face. Lol So many people asked me questions, gave me smiles, and great feedback on both looks as I went about my day as “two face”. Check out all the fun we had! Enjoy!

Creative Minds: Ashleigh the Wanderlust

Let me start by saying some creatives can NOT be tamed! I enjoy meeting people with wild hearts and it’s even more of a pleasure when you get to know a free spirit. My sister is the epitome of what I just described so a traditional “interview” for my creative minds series just didn’t happen. Lol However, she did do her magic and give some wonderful insight about who she is. Enjoy!

What am I passionate about?
Oh that’s simple! Traveling, books, photography, food, writing, Supernatural, Dr. Who, Sherlock(on every aspect the RDJ movies, CBS Elementary, BBC Sherlock and of course the source Sir Arthur Conan Doyle series).

How do I travel?
I usually pick a place with the most affordable airfare and build around it. I’m a backpacker, so I pack lightly. You know, no wheels, on my back. How much do I really wish to carry as I run(upstairs, crossing the street and my personal favorite through the airport)? I stay in hostels and load up on the complimentary breakfast. I eat with locals, seriously always follow the locals!! I take public transportation and walk A LOT(it’s kinda off sets my love for food hahaha). Most importantly, I save the word “no” for dire situations. If I’m offered food, drinks, an invitation, the answer is “YES!” Why? Because I have comfort at home and I do not travel for comfort. I travel for the love of the unknown. I travel to sit next to strangers and listen as they speak to me. I travel to learn new words and phrases, in a language I don’t speak. I travel to trust myself and humanity.

Reading?
“Reading gives us someplaces to go when we have to stay where we are.” -Mason Cooley
I’m quite keen on all genres

Where does my photography inspiration come from?
Family. My family means everything to me. I enjoy focusing on candid moments between love ones. When I do a shoot, I like for everyone to carry on as if I’m not there. I typically get the absolute best shots from children. They tend to easily forget about my presence and I’m able to capture their exuberance.

Food?
Everything, I will try a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g ‚ėļ How else will I know what I’m fond of?

What am I writing?
Mostly my own thoughts in my journal. Recently I’ve taken on the role of travel contributor on AuthenticallyB.com blog. You can find me in the travel section.

Am I a fangirl?
OF COURSE! I didn’t choose fangirling, fangirling chose me. Honestly I am unfaithful to all fandoms. There’s Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, Star Wars, LOTR. I mean just to name a few more hahaha.

What’s next for me?
You know, in a perfect world I would be a travel writer and photographer. I would also volunteer at schools and orphanages as a way to give back. All of this in hopes of perhaps, spreading my love of the camera, and overall eccentric nature with others.

Find Mischief,

Chris Signature

Merry Christmas ūüéĄ

I hope everyone’s Christmas is going well! We started a new tradition this year by having a family breakfast instead of lunch/dinner and it was awesome. We all went to my aunt’s house in pajamas and had some quality family time. It freed up then afternoon and evening for people who had multiple families to see today. What new traditions did your family try out this year? Enjoy the rest of this beautiful day! -The Gueary Familyūüíö

New Series Coming to A+B in January 2016:Creative Minds

I am SOOOOOO (<–intentional) excited to announce that a new monthly series is coming to AuthenticallyB.com starting in January 2016. I was thinking about things I love and authentically enjoy, and to be in a creative space mentally is so refreshing and enjoyable. My next thought was, “I know so many creative people and I absolutely love how they work constantly to perfect their crafts. This is how “Creative Minds” was born.

The name of this series was inspired by my twisted love for the T.V. show Criminal Minds. The killers on the show definitely have some really horrible issues but there is always a method to the madness and it’s beautiful to watch it unfold and to understand their motives.

Similarly, I will be seeking to get inside of “Creative Minds” that I know and share some insight with you. My hope is to inspire you to do that “thing” you truly love and want to pursue more often. It will also be great to shine a light on local and non local talent as well. If you know someone who should be featured in this Creative Minds series send me their information and I will connect with them. I hope you are just as excited about this as I am!!!!! Enjoy!
