Halloween 2015

This Halloween I went for a candy skull /day of the dead costume and here is how I pulled it together. I got the cat suit skeleton costume on amazon for around $20. I got the day of the dead face tattoos at a craft store for a few bucks. They go on like a typical temporary tattoo. I picked up 2 small bunches of flowers at the dollar store.

I already had an old head band that I was no longer using and my hot glue gun. (no DIY’er can live with out it!) I used my hot glue gun to keep the flowers on the head band just alternating colors(It took me about 10 minutes). A little lip color and some touches here and there with my face paint and I was good to go. Happy Halloween! Enjoy!

New Capsule Wardrobe

IMG_2853

Getting dressed for any occasion is exhausting at this point in my life.I have tons of clothes in my closet but I always feel like I have nothing to wear. As if this wasn’t enough, I also have space and storage issues. In April of 2015, my husband and I purchased a 1929 cottage in our ideal neighborhood that needed renovations. Let’s face it, back in 1929 every thing was built for efficiency so we have a tiny closet. We both agreed to be clutter free in the new house but I am still struggling to figure out how to make the most of my miniature closet.
Fast forward 7 months and…I am still having issues with “having nothing to wear.” I was searching for storage solutions when I came across a few articles that described a “capsule wardrobe” and I was immediately drawn to it. It put me in a mental space to have less things but of higher quality ,rather than have a bunch of cheaper items that I don’t want to wear.  I found Project333 extremely helpful. Project333 shows you how to create a capsule collection only wearing 33 pieces (Tops, Bottoms,Shoes) for 3 months.Between finding inspiration on Pinterest and Project333 I know I am ready for the next step which is to clean out my closet again. I recently got rid of a lot of items that no longer served me but I need to do another round now that I have a clear goal. I will take anything out of my closet that doesn’t fit well, is damaged, that I haven’t worn in a year, and most importantly, that I do not LOVE.

IMG_2851

Oh yes I said LOVE! I didn’t realize how many items I had in my closet that fit into one of those categories. It never clicked in my mind that I should love every clothing item I own. I feel like a new door has been opened and I can’t wait to walk through it.  I want to give a capsule wardrobe a try. The way things are currently aren’t working so why not try something new.

I feel really good about doing something to simply my life. Go with me on this journey to a new wardrobe and join me if you “never have anything to wear.” Enjoy!

Feel the Sun

IMG_7430Take a moment to feel the sun. When the sun is high in the sky, find your way outdoors and stand facing the sun. Close your eyes and take a deep breath for about 8-10 seconds. During those 8-10 seconds consciously focus on feeling the heat and warmth of the sun on your skin.

I started doing this shortly after the passing of one of my cousins’ that was like a brother to me. It was a regular morning and I was heading out for the day when I stopped briefly to take a breath. The sun was shining bright and I decided to close my eyes to appreciate the moment. In that time, I realized that my cousin would never feel the sun on his skin again.

We can get so busy with life that we may inadvertently neglect moments that are truly special. Find 8 seconds in your day and FEEL THE SUN. It costs you nothing and makes you feel so good. Enjoy!

Fall OOTD-Brown and Black Together?!?

Here’s a little proof that brown and black mesh well together. I too used to toy with the idea that maybe it was too dark and gloomy to pair black and brown simply because I viewed them both as neutrals. I’ve gotten past those ideas and came up with an outfit using items already in my closet.

What I love about this Fall outfit is in the details. The texture of this top and the ribbing on the knee of the leggings make it interesting. I also broke up the darkness in the top and leggings with a long white tank top.Focus on the small things that create places for your eyes to go.

Custom Made Minimalist Necklace

I can remember a time when my earrings were just as big as my natural hair. Both of those things have changed over the last year or two and I’ve since become very attracted to minimalist fashion including jewelry. I was looking for the perfect necklace for me which would have a thin chain, dainty charm, and maybe even an initial on it. I was having trouble finding what I wanted so I as a last resort I started looking on Etsy when I discovered the amazing shop of Stella Salvador. I love this necklace so much that I wear it EVERYDAY!

Check out www.etsy.com/shop/stellasalvador where you can check out all the other custom possibilities.

I appreciate how she gathers her inspiration and she was able to create EXACTLY what I wanted. As part of me exploring the possibility of starting a capsule wardrobe using minimalist pieces I felt like I should start now with only buying things that I love. Although a capsule wardrobe doesn’t always include jewelry, I think it’s very important my success to stay in the right mental space with loving my purchases. Enjoy!

Fall OOTD-Bold Piece

I LOVE animal prints so when I saw these leopard print pants they immediately caught my attention. They may be a little bold for some folks but they are just right for me. Here is just one way to put together a simple fall outfit using a really bold piece. Add the sweater as it gets cooler outside. Enjoy!

Get Killer Nails with Office Supplies

Sometimes I want fancy nails for special occasions but I don’t want to pay “special” nail salon prices. Get the look you want with little to no cost. All you need is some common office supplies, your favorite nail colors and about 20 mins. Gather these items to get started.

  1. Favorite nail polish (2 different colors)
  2. Tape
  3. Paper clips
  4. Sticky Notes
  5. Hole punch reinforcements

Start by painting all your nails with a base color. Now choose the tools you want based on the design you want to achieve. (TIP: Use a quick drying top coat to preserve your design while you work on other nails)

Open a paper clip. Place a few dips of nail polish on a sticky note. Dip the tip of the paper clip in the polish then onto your nail to create dots and flowers.

Place a hole punch reinforcement label on the upper part of your nail leaving the bottom uncovered. Paint the uncovered bottom part with a different color than your base color. Remove the label to reveal a crescent nail design.

Place tape vertically, diagonally, or horizontally to reveal crisp straight lines on your nails.

Try combining designs by using multiple tools. This will give you an authentically unique design.
Enjoy!

DIY No Sew Privacy Curtain

So many teachers from my school have these DIY no sew privacy curtains in their classrooms. A lot of us have desks with open backs so everything under our desks are exposed. Me personally, I like to sit comfortably in my chair even when I’m wearing a dress/skirt so this DIY curtain is a real problem solver for me. Even if your desk or storage area isn’t open, this could add some color and interest to your space. Here’s what you need. (Note: We got all our supplies from Hobby Lobby.)

  1. Fabric (1-3 yards)
  2. Small spring rod
  3. Ironing Hem tape
  4. Iron

Fold down the fabric enough for the rod to fit the space and iron it in place. Be sure the fold includes a space for the ironing tape.  Now place your hem tape under the fold near the bottom. Iron on top of the fabric according to the directions that came with your hem tape.  Repeat the process for the bottom of the fabric if you don’t want it to be a raw edge. Enjoy!

Earring Holder DIY

Want to display your earring collection in a unique way? Check out this quick DIY earring holder! You only need a few supplies.

  1. Picture frame (got mine from goodwill)
  2. Chicken wire (any home improvement store)
  3. Staple gun ( already had one)
  4. Craft wire cutters (already had one)

Start by disassembling your picture frame only leaving the perimeter. Now roll out your chicken wire and cut it slightly larger than the size of your picture frame. Use your staple gun to fasten the chicken wire to your frame. As soon as that’s done your earring holder is ready to hang and use! Enjoy!

Why I Went Natural (Must Read)

Why did you go natural? or Why do you choose not to wear your hair natural?

I saw this picture in my Bloglovin feed a few days ago and it dawned on me that the words “Go Natural” meant little to me just 5 short years ago. I’ve learned so much about living a cleaner ,more natural lifestyle both with the foods and products that I use and with how I wear my hair.

In the fall of 2010, my sister called me and said that she was going to start wearing her hair natural. This was the first I had heard of it and I quickly went on YouTube to watch the links from the videos she sent me. There I saw dozens and dozens of women empowering other women by showing them the beauty and uniqueness of their natural hair. I could not believe that I had been on earth 23 years without truly considering what I was doing with my hair. I decided that same night that I was going to follow in my sisters foot steps and wear my hair natural too! At the age of 28, I know so many amazing women of various ethnic backgrounds with beautiful hair. Hair that is beautiful because these women wear their hair exactly as it grows from their scalps with out finding fault in it.

I’m not saying these amazing women don’t flat-iron,curl, style, and change their hair often. These women just do those things for a different reason than why I was “choosing” to relax my hair with chemical straighteners. This may sound crazy, but I literally was not aware that I had options when it came to chemically straightening my hair. Was I really making a choice if I was unaware of all my options? There is a well-known saying that says “When you know better, you’ll do better”. Going natural for me took that saying and brought it to life.

 Fall 2010, Newly Natural

So again, why did you go natural? or Why do you choose not to wear your hair natural?

I Love Unisex T-Shirts

I’m completely smitten with this new unisex graphic T-shirt! ❤️ It has a slightly oversized fit for those days you feel pudgier than you want to and it’s sooo comfy. It comes in a few more colors but I love classic black and white. It has a very minimalist feel and can be paired with so many other things. Lastly, I happen to know the amazing artist that designed it.

Check out some of Elizabeth Hinson Wolever ‘s other designs and get yours.

Storage on wheels

This mobile storage unit is heaven sent! My friend and I use them in our classrooms at school and another friend of mine uses it in the laundry room in her home. This cart is limitless. It is compact but provides 3 roomy shells for stuff!

Rustic Jewelry Holder

This jewelry holder is one of the simplest D+I+Y projects I’ve ever done. What’s so great about it is that the customization options are endless.

Decide how large you want your wood to be and how many knobs you want. Get a piece of wood that’s to your liking. I got mine at the lumber area of habitat for humanity home improvement store for less than $2. Sand your wood to avoid splinters.

I picked up my knobs at hobby lobby. I literally held 5 knobs in my hand at a time and switched them out one at a time until I liked the combination that I had.

Lastly, drill the holes evenly spaced based on the size of the knob stems. Tread the knob through the holes that you drilled and screw the washer and nut to the back. I used craft wire and my mini staple gun to make a place to hang it from.

Enjoy!

About

Welcome to Authentically+B!
IMG_6828
On Authentically+B you will find the confidence and drive to be authentically you. I will highlight DIY projects, health, wellness, beauty, and fashion from a whole new perspective. Being a part of Authentically+B will help you take things in your daily life from abstract and complex to super simple.

Hello, my name is Brandy. I’m a 29 year old mother, wife, elementary school teacher and life style blogger. I began Authentically+B for so many reasons. On the top of that list is helping others listen to the voice inside themselves. There are so many trends and standards that drown out our true inner wants and needs. Another reason being that my husband and I recently purchased a 1929 cottage that required a lot of TLC. While we did hire professionals for the big stuff, we also saved a ton of money by tackling many other projects ourselves. It was so much fun sharing transformations from our home. I then realized that there were so many projects I wanted to share from other areas of my life and now I have a place to do that! I hope you enjoy reading as much as I do sharing.

I love hearing from readers, blog friends, and potential sponsors! Have a question? Have a suggestion? Want me to blog about something specific? Send me an email at AuthenticallyB@yahoo.com and I would love to connect with you!

Sleep Well Tonight!

cropped-cropped-img_9039.jpg

There I was, in bed at a decent time trying to get comfortable. Long story short, I was laying there, and laying there, and laying there. Sleep would not come to me. I usually would have fallen asleep by now.  Before I knew it ,30 minutes had passed and I was still awake. I could not turn my mind off enough to get to sleep. I was actually thinking about getting this blog started so my mind was racing.

Once I realized that I wasn’t going to get any rest unless I did something, I took action! I didn’t start blogging but I did the next best thing. I opened my journal/planner and started writing away. Getting all my thoughts and ideas out of my head and on to my paper worked like a charm. I’ve even typed notes in my phone a few time just to keep my mind clear before bed. Once it was there I didn’t have to worry about forgetting things. That alone helped me to rest easier.

The next time you can’t sleep because you are thinking about work, cleaning, and the never-ending list of things you MUST do, jump to action! Get it out of your mind, on to paper or in your phone, then put it all down and rest. You will need all the rest you can get to tackle that list in the morning. Rest well.

A Keepsake

IMG_1841IMG_1838
We’ve all been there before. You are going on an amazing  trip or getting close to returning home from a trip when you start thinking about souvenirs. No you don’t want to get the dreaded T-shirt that you’ll never wear again! Not to mention that your refrigerator is already covered in magnets. Post cards get thrown away and cheaply made trinkets loose their value when they have to compete for space on your coffee table and dresser. How can you keep lasting memories that you can share easily with out pulling out your phone to scroll through pictures or worse, your photo albums?!? My solution for this problem came in the form of a shadow box (50% of with a coupon at a craft store) and interesting things that I collected through out my trip. This method of commemorating  my trip to London was not only cheaper than anything I mentioned above but  but is also beautiful to display in your home.

IMG_1834IMG_1843
Start by getting a shadow box in the size you want. This will help you to plan which items to collect. Now is also a time to decide if this will be for one trip or multiple trips. (Plan on adding items from multiple trips if you are lacking wall space) While you are on your trip collect things like cool coasters from restaurants , maps, brousures, newspaper clippings, currency, luggage tags, airplane ticket stubs, and anything else that will make your display pop. First layout the items to get an idea of how it will look. Use a hot glue gun to layer and secure the pieces to the backing of the shadow box. Now secure the backing to the front portion of the box. Finally, you have a keepsake that is easy on the eyes and  you can add to it as you travel to new places. It’s sure to be a conversation piece when you have company over. Enjoy!
